I met LaTonia in mid-February outside the abortion clinic in Jackson. When I told her about the support available to her, should she choose life, she listened closely and began to ask specific questions about how we could help her. I could see that her heart was soft and that she felt convicted about what she was about to do, so I gave her my number and pleaded with her to turn away and to let us walk with her through the difficulties ahead. A few minutes after she drove away, she called me to tell me that she had decided to keep her baby and ‘accept our help.
Later that day we met up at a Subway in Jackson. That’s when I learned more about her situation. A diligent and loving mom of four kids five and under, she felt overwhelmed by the impossibility of caring for another child. They live off of her husband’s Walmart salary and were already making use of many outreach programs such as Women in Crisis and food stamps. I could see the tenderness she showed for her kids and how much they seemed to be thriving.
Over the past three months, we’ve been able to raise funds to help with food, gas, safe beds for the kids, and other household items. LaTonia has been able to work out continued childcare and was offered a teaching assistant job in the fall in addition to the work she has lined up for the summer. Many families from the community have reached out by donating helpful items, praying for her, and offering their time to help out when needed. We will be having a baby shower this summer, as well I’ve watched the Lord provide through His church each time a new need arises. He is so faithful! There is still a long road ahead for this sweet family, but God’s mercies are new each morning! Please pray for financial provision, courage, and ultimately salvation for them!
